ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Many people around the country are making campaign donations to candidates in the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s race.

Sitting Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce is not running for re-election. Four Democrats are vying to replace her.

Contribution records show Missouri State Rep. Kim Gardner received a $67,000 donation from a Washington D.C-based superpac called the Safety and Justice Committee, a group funded by billionaire George Soros.

“I support any organization that supports my platform in terms of rebuilding public trust and the broken criminal justice system as well as making us smart and tough on crime,” said Gardner.

Assistant Circuit Attorney Patrick Hamacher, who is also running, is critical of such a donation.

“It’s disappointing when you see an outside billionaire who’s involved in a local election here in St. Louis and who’s never visited St. Louis. I’m really proud I’ve raised $85,000 from more than 475 supporters,” said Hamacher.

Assistant Circuit Attorney Mary Pat Carol has taken in more campaign dollars than any other candidate in the race. She said a lot of it came from her family inheritance.

“I put a lot of money myself into this race. It was important to me that if I was going to ask someone else to take a bet on me, I wanted to show I was all in,” said Carol.

Former St. Louis Police Detective Steve Harmon received a $30,000 donation from a living trust in Michigan, which turns out to be a hunting and body armor supply business.

“That has a lot to do with the intellectual property. As a St. Louis police commander, I oversaw the fraud unit many years ago and I made contacts within that arena. Investigators from those corporations made contact and reached out to me,” Harmon said.
