SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A string of suspicious fires that have occurred in a south St. Louis neighborhood has neighbors worried a vacant building near their home may be the next target.

The concern was heightened after a fire broke out at a home on Taft near Chippewa late Monday night. Neighbors say they heard an explosion and the house quickly became engulfed in flames. The blaze also caused damage to the homes on either side.

There have been 30 suspicious fires in and around the Benton Park neighborhood over the past nine months.

Firefighters say vacant homes are easy targets for arsonists.
