CHESTER, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A man who was sentenced to prison after pleading guilty to raping a 10-year-old Metro East girl between December 2014 and June 2015 was found dead in his cell last week.

Gary M.J. “Mikel” Grodin, 33, was sentenced to 56-years in prison after pleading guilty to four of 31 child pornography and predatory criminal sexual assault charges on June 28.

The victim, who was from Swansea, told police Grodin would bind her hands with plastic zip ties so she could not cover herself.  When authorities searched the home they found pictures and videos of the girl being raped.

Grodin was found dead inside his cell just before 10:30 a.m. on July 20. It does not appear he died from natural causes, Randolph County Coroner Randy Dudenbostel said.
