ST.LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – A man was pronounced dead after a basement caught fire in the St. Louis Hills neighborhood Friday.

Firefighters said they saw smoke when they arrived at the one-story brick home in the 4500 block of Prague, near Hampton Avenue, around 1 a.m. They also said there was a man in his 20s trapped in the basement.

“We removed him immediately, starting performing CPR, unfortunately after being transported he was pronounced at the hospital,” said St. Louis Fire Department Capt. Garon Mosby.

According to the St. Louis Fire Department, the home had no working smoke alarms.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
