MAPLEWOOD, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

A memorial statue was unveiled on July 21 for a Maplewood firefighter who was killed in the line of duty.

The memorial is for Ryan Hummert. It was dedicated on the eighth anniversary of his death. On July 21, 2008 he responded to a call for a vehicle on fire. It was the first and only time he responded to a call as a Maplewood firefighter.

When Hummert and other first responders arrived, a sniper started shooting. Hummert was killed and two police officers were injured.

Shortly after his death, city officials voted to rename Junior High Park as Ryan Hummert Memorial Park.

The statue is the culmination of years of fundraising efforts. The sculptors who created the statue presented the tools used in the making of the statue to the Hummert family.
