GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Lawmakers say since November, 2,000 workers were laid off from Granite City Steel.

Lawmakers say they are looking at extending their unemployment benefits.

Three Metro East lawmakers say they have sponsored a new bill in the state house that would make sure benefits do not run out for the workers.

Lawmakers held a rally on July 21 speaking directly to the workers.

State Representative Jay Hoffman (D) of Belleville, Illinois said, “I defy any legislator to vote against you guys when you have done nothing wrong but has been as result of the foreign dumping of steel and foreign countries doing something wrong to not vote to override that veto.”

According to lawmakers, the bill is in the initial stages in the legislature. It is not clear when lawmakers will take action on the bill.
