EAST ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – An East St. Louis officer was hurt when a handcuffed suspect was on the loose on July 20, according to police.

One resident told News 4 she saw the suspect running down the street with his handcuffed behind his back.

After running with hands cuffed, police say the suspect walked half a block to an East St. Louis police car.

According to police, there were no shots fired, just a struggle between the suspect and a sergeant after a routine traffic stop.

“The guy was suspended, no valid driver’s license and some other issues. He was handcuffed to the rear, and as the sergeant was gaining control of him to put him in the vehicle, he broke away, and the sergeant gave pursuit and the sergeant was injured,” said Captain Bobby Cole, East St. Louis Police Department.

Police say the East Louis Police Department sergeant appeared to hurt his arm. Police then descended on the blocks around Ridge Avenue and 18th Street for the handcuffed man.

Authorities say with the public’s help, officers captured the man. Police say the suspect was hiding in the brush behind a few abandoned houses in the 500 block of Alexander Place.

By the end of the chase, no one was hurt.
