WEST ALTON (KMOV.com) -

Residents in West Alton are taking steps to deal with flooding after flood waters threatened homes in late December in 2015.

Many homeowners are trying to elevate their homes as a way to avoid flood waters in the future. West Alton sits right on the Mississippi River in an area prone to flooding. Resident Frank McGhee told News 4 more than six homes have already been or will be elevated.

Jon Clark and his wife have been out of their home since late December 2015. Eventually, their home will be sitting 13 feet off the ground. Clark and his wife hope to be back home by the end of the summer.

“There’s a process you gotta take and if you’re gonna do it, that’s what you gotta do, so you get yourself ready to do it,” said Clark.

McGhee said the flood waters in December 2015 receded within a few weeks and homes dried out, with only a few having to be condemned.

While the threat of a flood may be a yearly event, McGhee believes a serious flood only happens every 10 years.
