ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A local woman is concerned she could become a target due to the recent spike in crimes against Muslims in recent weeks.

St. Louis resident Letitia Parker said she doesn’t want to be blamed for the actions of terrorists, but fears becoming a target following recent attacks, like the Pulse Nightclub shooting by a man identified as Muslim.

“When I started practicing Islam it was so beautiful, but I see how the world is making it look ugly and it makes me sad,” Parker said.

According to a study from California State University, hate crimes and harassment of Muslims spike in the weeks following an attack.

Parker fears all Muslims will be blamed for the nightclub shooter’s actions, which would make her a target.

According to the Council on American-Islamic Relations, there have been 14 reports in the St. Louis region of Muslims being harassed based on religion this year. According to the FBI, there are an average of 13 hate crimes against Muslims across the United States per month.  In November of 2015, following a terrorist attack in Paris, there were 38 hate crimes reported against Muslims.

Parker told News 4 she has not been a victim, but fears that could change.

“Sometimes it makes me feel like I am not safe. Sometimes I do tend to stay in the house a lot I don’t go out as much as I should as much as I need to,” Parker said.
