ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- The Cardinals announced Friday they signed Cuban center fielder Jonatan Machado to a minor league contract.
Machado, a center fielder, joins shortstop Erik Pena and catcher Ivan Herrera as international players recently signed by the club.
Machado is 17, and has high-end speed to go with a solid glove in center. He hits from the left side and projects as a leadoff man.
The Cardinals began scouting Machado in 2014, when he hit .336 in 137 plate appearances and struck out just four percent of the time for La Habana’s 15U team.
He also played for Cuba’s gold medal-winning team at the 2014 IBAF Baseball World Cup.
Machado was signed to a 2016 contract and will report to the DSL Cardinals.
