SOUTH ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -

A 40-year-old man is facing charges for allegedly fatally shooting his ex-girlfriend and her new boyfriend in south St. Louis Wednesday.

Maurice Hoskins, 40, is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder, armed criminal action and assault on a law enforcement officer.

Authorities allege Hoskins shot and killed Jacara Sproaps, 38, and Maurice Paltrow, 40. He is accused of seriously wounding Sproaps son, 18.

Hoskins had previously been in a relationship with Sproaps and police believe he harassed her and her family after they broke up.

Sproaps and Paltrow were standing in the 3000 block of Miami Wednesday night, while family members were nearby on a porch. Also close by was Hoskins, police say. He noticed Sproaps and Paltrow in the street and began yelling at them and approached them.

He then allegedly produced a gun and pointed at them. Sproaps and Paltrow then struggled with Hoskins for the gun. Hoskins then allegedly shot Paltrow twice in the head.

Police believe Sproaps and her son then ran but Hoskins chased after them, allegedly shooting Sproaps in the head and back. She ran into an alley and collapsed. Evidence indicates she was shot once while in the alley.

Hoskins also allegedly shot Sproaps’ son and kept chasing him after shooting him. Sproaps’ son was able to run inside his house.  He was taken a hospital in critical condition.

Two officers then arrived on scene in a squad car. Police said Hoskins fired shots at the squad car, with one officer being hit in the ankle.

Hoskins ran but was caught in the 3200 block of Minnesota.

Hoskins is being held on a $2 million cash-only bond.

Sproaps was the principal at Dunbar Elementary School in St. Louis.
