Police: Naked man fatally shot by officers was firing gunshots

EAST ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – A suspect was injured during an officer-involved shooting in East St. Louis Monday.

Officers with the East St. Louis Police Department were called to the intersection of 16th and Gaty Avenue of a nude man who was firing gunshots in the area.

According to police, Jason Brooks, 41, began by firing shots in an unknown direction while standing on his front porch without wearing any clothing at 6 a.m.

Officers say at some point, Brooks went down the street and began firing at bystanders. When officers arrived, Brooks then fired his weapon towards police. Officers returned fire, striking Brooks. Authorities say officers were not injured.

Police say Brooks returned to his porch at some point before being shot by officers. According to authorities, Brooks had two guns.

Officers say Brooks was fatally wounded during the exchange and was pronounced dead at a St. Louis area hospital.

Authorities say the East St. Louis Police Department requested ISP Zone 6 Investigations to conduct an independent officer-involved shooting investigation for the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
