ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The St. Louis County Prosecutor has ruled that an off-duty officer was acting in self-defense after a 20-year-old man smashed through a door while breaking into the officer's home in south St. Louis County last year.

Police say the suspect, identified as Tyler Gebhard, came to the home and rang the doorbell. Family members knew who the suspect was and ran upstairs to hide. The off-duty officer was in the home with his wife, mother-in-law and two children.

Investigators say the suspect went to the back of the house and threw a concrete planter through the door and entered the home. Once the suspect was in the home, the off-duty officer shot him. It is believed the family and the suspect have a connection through a church.

The shooting happened in July, 2016.

The suspect was also suffering emotional issues and posted threats against the family online, police said.

The suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

No other injuries were reported. The officer was update on paid administrative leave.
