ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The man who fatally shot a 45-year-old man in north St. Louis over the weekend claims he did so in self-defense.

Police said they were dispatched to a fatal shooting around 2:30 a.m. on July 9 in the 2500 block of Natural Bridge, near the Penrose and Greater Ville neighborhood.

When police arrived, they found Tywan Smith, of the 3300 block of Gravois, dead from a gunshot wound.

According to authorities, the shooter, who knew the victim, stayed at the scene and handed over two guns to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

The shooter said before he shot Smith, he saw him raising his arm towards him and thought he had a gun. The 48-year-old, who has not been charged and was released from police custody pending further investigation, fired multiple shots towards Smith.
