Nehemiah Program assists those who cannot afford a house on their own

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ( -

Homelessness is a rising problem in the St. Louis community.

Vivian Dudley, the founder of the non-profit organization Nehemiah Program, is passionate to helping those who cannot qualify for housing by themselves.

"Whatever their barrier is to permanent housing, we will walk with them through the process so they never have to be homeless again," Dudley said.

Dudley said, depending on the situation, the Nehemiah Program will help homeowners find employment, a solution to their credit problems, and cover closing costs. If it comes down to it, the Nehemiah Program will even finance the home themselves.

Helping those find a permanent home is a passion for Dudley, because 23 years ago, she herself was without a home.

"I was homeless. We lost everything," Dudley said. "I (didn't) have a college degree. We were poor, stealing, and drugs; you name it, I was out there doing it."

Dudley said being raised in the church, she turned to the only thing she knew: prayer.

"My promise to (God) was, 'If you get me out of this hole that I dug for myself, then I'd spend the rest of my days helping other people'," Dudley said.

It's a promise Dudley has since kept.
