ST. LOUIS (BaseballStL) - The Cardinals placed backup catcher Brayan Pena on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday because of inflammation in his left knee.
Rookie catcher Alberto Rosario has been called up from Triple-A Memphis and is available to play Wednesday night against the Brewers.
Pena opened the season on the DL and missed the first 75 games of the season after his left knee was operated on. He has only started twice in 2016, going 1-8 at the plate.
Pena was placed on the DL one day after he announced he was joining the Army Reserve. His MLB contract forbids him from joining, but he will still be allowed to do other activities that reservists do.
Rosario has appeared in 18 games for the Memphis Redbirds and has compiled a .281 average (32-114). He has a 42 percent career caught stealing rate and has thrown out the same percentage of potential base stealers in 2016.
Rosario is in his 11th professional season and has been with the Cardinals organization since the 2015 season.
