ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) -- The Cardinals announced Tuesday their most powerful bat will be absent for the rest of the first half. Brandon Moss, who leads the team with 17 homers and has driven in 40 runs, was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a left ankle sprain.
“I think the likelihood of him being back before the All-Star break was very questionable and we didn’t want to play short the rest of the way,” GM John Mozeliak said.
Moss stumbled going around first base in Monday’s contest against the Pirates but remained in the game. Tuesday morning he woke up sore and had an exam. He was subsequently diagnosed with a Grade 1 sprain, which is the lowest severity.
To fill his spot on the roster, the team recalled Randal Grichuk from Triple-A Memphis. After hitting just .206 in 62 games with the Cardinals, the young center fielder hit five home runs and drove in 15 RBIs in 15 games in the minors while hitting .283.
Grichuk is driving up from Memphis before the game and is expected to arrive at the stadium some time around 8:00 p.m.
