BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

Improper disposal of fireworks started a house fire in Belleville Sunday, firefighters say.

A man who lives in a home on 42nd Street had just shot off fireworks when he decided to throw away the remains, which were still smoldering.

The trash can with the remains inside caught fire. The blaze then spread to the garage. It damage both the house and two cars, firefighters say. Nobody was injured.

A neighbor knocked on the homeowner’s door and told him to get out of the house before the fire spread.
