A suspected drunk driver collided with a Wentzville officer’s squad car during the evening on July 3 while responding to a rollover accident on Highway 61.
Kurt Frisz, Wentzville Police Chief said, “Right after he [the officer] got out of the vehicle he heard an impact. He turned around and a vehicle had collided with the rear end of his police Tahoe. As it turned out, the driver that struck his vehicle was impaired.”
Frisz says the driver was traveling at an estimated 60 miles per hour and they are fortunate the officer was far enough away from the car to be safe. If the sergeant were closer to the vehicle, it could have been a “tragic” situation.
Frisz also says the officer did nothing wrong.
“The officer set up a good safe zone. There is no excuse for this,” said Frisz.
“Every holiday weekend is like this. You see the warnings, you see the special enforcement. My gosh, when we have to work an accident like that the scene is well lit and all the lights on the vehicles are activated,” said Frisz.
Officials are waiting for the blood alcohol content of the driver to come back to officially file charges. Authorities say if that does indeed happen, it will not be the first drinking and driving offense for the driver.
