With car accident fatalities up, MSHP urges safety this holiday weekend

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Many people will be traveling by car, truck, and SUV this holiday weekend, so the Missouri State Highway Patrol wants to remind everyone to be safe.

The number of driving fatalities is up this year in both Missouri and Illinois.

Illinois has lost 489 people to fatal car accidents so far this year, which is a 7.2 percent increase from this time last year. On the Missouri side, 399 people have died in car accidents, which is a 3 percent increase from this time last year.

Missouri State Highway Patrol said that number is high considering the year is only half way through.

Highway Patrol also said the No. 1 leading cause of deadly auto accidents is distracted driving, with speeding coming in at No. 2.

Wearing a seat belt increases your chances of surviving a car accident by 50 percent, so Highway Patrol is reminding drivers to buckle up.

Anyone who wishes to report a dangerous driver should dial (*-5-5).
