A West Point cadet was laid to rest on what would have been his 19th birthday.

Tom Surdyke, who just finished his first year at West Point, was on vacation in the Hamptons with his family before the cadet was due back for field training.

On June 24, police said Surdyke, 18, ran into the water to try and rescue a classmate, who was in a rip current. Surdyke was taken to a hospital, where he died a few days later.

On July 1, hundreds gathered on the football field of St. Pius X High School, where Surdyke graduated, to light candles and say prayers.

Surdyke was buried with full military honors on July 4.
