ST. LOUIS - If the rain holds off long enough for game action Saturday, the Cardinals will be missing two big bats from their lineup.
Matt Carpenter is not with the team having traveled to Ohio due to a death in his family.
Mike Matheny said the club expects their leadoff man to miss just one game. Tommy Pham will fill Carpenter’s top of the lineup spot while Kolten Wong gets his first start at second base since being recalled from Memphis.
Additionally, Greg Garcia will start at third base in place of Jhonny Peralta, who gets the day off.
“Peralta is just one of those day games after night kind of deal,” Matheny described.
Stephen Piscotty makes his return to the lineup just a couple of days after taking two baseballs off his ankle.
Here’s the full Cardinal lineup:
Tommy Pham, CF
Aledmys Diaz, SS
Matt Holliday, LF
Stephen Piscotty, RF
Brandon Moss, 1B
Yadier Molina, C
Kolten Wong, 2B
Greg Garcia, 3B
Tuivailala back in St. Louis
Subbing in for the injured Kevin Siegrist, reliever Sam Tuivailala is ready to show the Cardinals how versatile and complete his pitching repertoire is.
“For the most part all year I’ve felt good. My curveball and cutter have been going good for me. It’s just made my fastball that much better and I’m able to control it on both sides of the plate. It’s allowing me to lower my pitch count and get guys out quicker.”
His ability to slice and dice hitter has given Tuivailala a 2-1 record in Triple-A and 13 saves in 16 opportunities, numbers could enough to be named to the Class AAA All-Star team.
