ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Twenty-seven St. Louis police recruits will graduate from the Police Academy Thursday night.

The new recruits, which include eight women and 10 minorities, will be on the streets starting Tuesday.

Police Chief Sam Dotson has been fighting to have more officers for a few years. The fight has included heated debates about the racial makeup of the force and the areas where officers are patrolling.

Alderman Antonio French has criticized the chief for flooding downtown St. Louis with officers following a string of violent crimes, saying the same protection needs to be provided in north St. Louis. The chief argued the department was doing its best given the officer shortage.

Officials told News 4 about another 60 recruits are on the verge of graduating, which would leave the department 40 officers short of the chief’s desired number.
