ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The St. Louis County Police Department says they are training its next group of bike patrol officers.

Police say bike patrol officers will be a welcome addition to the bicycle unit that exists across the country.

According to authorities, adding a new group of bike patrol officers is a great way to engage with the community. Police say it is a very effective tool at their disposal.

Sergeant Aaron Rodeiger, North St. Louis County Precinct said, "They're engaging the community and out of the cars. They’re more approachable and develop dialogue with the residents and tackle problems that develop in the neighborhoods."

The latest class of patrol officers is in session to patrol North County.

The North County precinct has had the program since 1995.

Police say during the third week of June, seven officers headed to the St. Louis County Municipal Police Academy for the bicycle training program. Those officers will add to the 17 North County precinct officers who are already bicycle certified.

Police say those officers can be on bikes weather permitting and it’s a great way for them to get out into the community.

Rodeiger said bicycles are, "… a very useful tool. It gets the officers out of the vehicles. They can get around different places they normally can’t when they’re in the cars. So it’s a great tool they have.”

Authorities say every precinct in St. Louis County has a bicycle unit.

According to police, bicycle units come in handy for special events.
