ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com) – Two suspects are in custody after a man was assaulted during a robbery inside a University City apartment Tuesday morning.

Around 2:05 a.m., three suspects armed with guns entered an unlocked apartment near Briscoe and Olive. Once they entered the apartment, the suspects found a 33-year-old man, who was visiting the tenant of the apartment and her boyfriend, and demanded money.  After demanding the money, the suspects took several purses and cell phones, police said.

After taking the items, the suspects were trying to run out of a rear door of the apartment when one of their guns accidentally discharged, striking the kitchen floor. The suspects then ran from the front of apartment.

One of the suspects was immediately taken into custody by a University City Police sergeant. Another suspect was found around 5:45 a.m. with the help of a K-9 officer following a short chase through an adjacent lumber yard.

After running out of the apartment, the suspects dropped the stolen items, according to police.

The 33-year-old victim was taken to the hospital to be treated for head trauma. He was listed in critical but stable condition.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the University City Police Department at 314-725-2211 ext. 8010 or CrimeStoppers at 866-371-TIPS.
