Monday night, the process moved forward with the Chesterfield Planning Commission for the Hardee’s Iceplex to close after it was sold to Dallas-based Top Golf.

The commission heard its first public comment on the project, including a presentation from Top Golf attorneys and representatives.

But the development leaves over 1,000 kids who play youth hockey at the Iceplex in need of somewhere else to go.

Developer Tom Kaiman is working with the Chesterfield Hockey Association to build a new facility.

“Unfortunately it depends what their timeline looks like. We’ll probably be without an ice rink,” said Kaiman.

Top Golf is expected to take over the facility in April 2017, but Kaiman said it could take two years to build a new ice rink.

He and other youth hockey leaders are working on a temporary solution.

“It's vitally important for us to be able to support the youth hockey programs and other youth sports programs that use the facility,” said Kaiman, “If we’re not able to figure out the solution, It’s pretty detrimental to a number of those programs.”

The search is taking place amid growth in St. Louis youth hockey. Five St. Louis area players were taken in the first round of NHL draft on June 24.
