BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A man was shot in the face as he left a store in Belleville Sunday night, police said.

The victim left Sammy's Market on North Douglas around 10:30 p.m. when police said someone he did not know approached him and made small talk. The suspect then allegedly pulled out a gun and fired shots, hitting the victim in the face. The two then struggled over the gun, which failed to discharge.

Ehssan "Sammy" Hamdan, owner of Sammy's Market, said the victim then ran back to his store to call for help.

“I looked at him and he’s leaking blood, so I gave him a towel and some water. I sat him up and helped him. After he got shot, he came back up here and fell to the floor. The first thing he said ‘Help me man, I just got shot,” said Hamdan.

The victim is expected to be okay.

Hamdan told News 4 he is upgrading his security system to protect himself and his customers.

Authorities are still searching for the suspect.
