JEFFERSON COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

Police say the need to feed a drug addiction is the reason behind thefts of guns and tools in Jefferson County.

Tools and guns being stolen from homes is a recent rising trend in Jefferson County. One Hillsboro woman told News 4 her home was targeted and she is on a fixed income and can’t replace what is lost.

Lieutenant Gary Higginbotham with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department says thieves are looking for something that can be sold quickly for cash, so drugs can be bought.

“Usually there’s an addiction accompanying these thefts but not always,” said Higginbotham.

Authorities recommend people mark their tools so police can confirm who the rightful owner is and also keep the tools and guns under lock and key.

Police have identified a potential suspect in recent thefts.
