(KMOV.com) – For about two hours Sunday night, residents in East St. Louis were without electricity after storms knocked out power throughout the city, including the 911 center.

“The generator is something we really have to have. It’s important,” said East St. Louis Mayor Emeka Jackson-Hicks. She says nearly 3000 residents were without power during the outage. “At this point, I’m very concerned about the well-being of our citizens and how we are taking care of them.”

The 911 center was without power as well, which caused problems for Emergency Management Director Anthony Vinson Jr.

“It caused some (problems), but not so much that we can’t make sure our citizens are safe,” he said. Emergency calls were rerouted to the county’s 911 call center.

However, many of these issues could have been avoided if the city had its own generator, which it doesn’t.

“We have not been able to get a generator approved due to some of our council members being absent or not support the general budget,” Jackson-Hicks said.

She says she hopes this power outage serves as a wakeup call to council members and residents.
