BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A new $10 million police station will be opening in Belleville.

For decades, officers in Belleville said they have been forced to work in closets and different buildings because the department had outgrown its downtown facility. The police department nearly doubled since the old downtown building was built, from 39 to 85 sworn officers and 111 total employees.

The new building allows officers to bring criminals in safely because in the old building officers had to take them up four flights of stairs, which could have been dangerous, according to Sgt. Mark Heffernan.

For the first time in more than 10 years all of the departments are under one roof, including records, evidence and investigation.

“To be quite frank our current facility is inadequate and almost embarrassing,” Sgt. Heffernan said. “This [new] facility is something the officers can be proud of.”

The new dispatch center can hold more than five dispatchers and the center can withstand an EF-5 tornado. It also has physical and tactical training areas and a patrol briefing room.

The department will be holding an open house at 10 a.m. Saturday for the community to check out the new building, located at 720 West Main Street.
