FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Ferguson Police Chief Delrish Moss has hired his first new officer to the force.

Officer Drew Canaday, who grew up in Ferguson, told News 4 he got into law enforcement because he had a mix of negative and positive experiences with officers growing up. The new hire is one of seven African American police officers in Ferguson.

The chief said hiring Officer Canaday is more than just diversifying the department because it is about finding the right people.

“It was also about getting people who had an interest in Ferguson, who had ties to the community, who knew people here so they can add something other than just the hard of law enforcement to the job,” Chief Moss said. “There’s a softer touch that’s critical to how this job is done.”

Officer Canaday spent 14 years working for St. Louis County Corrections before taking on his new role. He said when he saw the opening at the Ferguson Police Department he jumped at the opportunity.

“What better way to help my town than to be the first face that everyone sees when they call. I wanna be that guy when people call, when they’re at their worst moments,” Officer Canaday said.

Chief Moss said he is looking to hire 11 more officers, but will take his time to make sure the right people for the job are selected.
