BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A suspect who was fatally shot by officers in Belleville overnight has been identified.

Belleville Police Sgt. Mark Heffernan said officers were called to a disturbance outside an apartment on Pheasantwood Drive before 10:30 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, Angelo Brown, 35, was observed holding a pistol, police say. He ran out of the building and two officers chased him on foot.

Police believe Brown was drunk.

Police said he fired shots at officers during the pursuit. The officers then returned fire, fatally shooting Brown.

“Our officers did fire at the suspect, striking him. Our officers have been relieved of duty at this point as standard procedure,” Sgt. Heffernan said.

Both officers were placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, per department protocol. No officers were injured in the incident.

The Illinois State Police Department has taken over the investigation.

No other information has been released.
