ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – The City of St. Louis is on a mission to take make sure no child goes hungry while on summer break.

School’s Out Café program is sponsored by the Department of Human Services in the City of St. Louis. The program serves thousands of children free meals.

The City of St. Louis wants to make sure kids stick to a healthy routine, especially during the summer.

Dana Moorehead, Recreation Supervisor for the City of St. Louis says every child gets a free breakfast and lunch during the week, covered by federal funds.

Moorehead says the kids enjoy the food.

There are 65 volunteer sites throughout the city. One of those sites is at Wohl Recreation Center near Kingshighway and Martin Luther King Drive.

The Wohl Recreation Center also provides daily activities for the children.

"Keep kids off of the streets, gives them something to do Monday through Friday," said Moorehead.

One of the participating children said, "We get to have talent shows and sports days."

The kids say it is the perfect alternative to being bored at home during the summer.

School’s Out Café runs through August 12.

Moorehead says there is no limit on the number of children the city serves.
