ST. CHARLES COUNTY, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- An O'Fallon, Missouri woman was struck and killed by a car on the Boone Bridge Thursday morning.

Sergeant Al Nothum from the Missouri Highway Patrol said 28-year-old Stephanie Phung was driving west on the bridge and struck a tire in the road. The tire then got lodged underneath her vehicle.

According to Nothum, her car became too difficult to drive, so she stopped while she was still on the bridge and got out to look at the problem.

“A car coming up behind her swerves and misses her at the last minute. The vehicle behind that car, which was a small pickup truck, tried to do the same thing, but this person was unsuccessful in avoiding her,” said Nothum.

Phung was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident happened around 9:45 Thursday morning.

Police closed the westbound lanes of the bridge for hours as they investigated the accident, but the lanes reopened around 2 p.m. the same day.

On the westbound side of the Boone Bridge there are no shoulders. Nothum said if your car breaks down on a bridge without shoulders, it is safer to stay in your car and immediately call 911 or *55 which dials the highway patrol directly.

It is unclear if the driver that struck and killed Phung did anything wrong and will be issued any citations.
