(KMOV.com) – A parent created a car seat monitor that can be used on an application on your phone.

Bob Steffen is a parent and he invented a car seat monitor called Driver’s Little Helper.

"I hope it saves lives. That's the main purpose, too many tragedies," said Steffen.

The system is driven by an application on your phone. The app lets you know if your child gets out of the car seat and sends alerts if you have left your child in the car.

Using a teddy bear as a prop, Steffen’s demonstrates how the system operates.

Removing the car seat’s fabric cover, a weight sensor is placed in the center of the seat’s plastic molding.

"[The] weight sensor goes into car seat, it will work on any car seat; senses weight above 6 pounds," said Steffen.

The device is then attached to the sensor and is fastened to the back of the seat or the seatbelt.

"This is the actual car seat monitor, controls everything," said Steffen.

The child sits on the weight sensor that is attached to the car seat. The device then speaks directly to the app on your phone.

If you close the car door and walk away from the vehicle without your child, the app beeps.

The device also keeps track of the temperature in the back of the car.

The system costs $80. If you are interested in purchasing or learning more about the device, click here.
