(KMOV.com) – A man is lucky to be alive after being rescued by crews after crashing his jet ski into a dam on the Mississippi River.

The incident happened in Alton around 1:45 p.m. after the man hit the dam and was sucked 17 feet below the surface. He popped back up on the other side of the dam, screaming for help.

The jet skier apparently went out of the designated perimeter in the water. He was wearing a lifejacket.

“He’s very lucky to be alive,” said Alton Fire Department Chief Bernie Sebold. “If you’re going to operate a wave runner, you should operate it with a buddy in the event that you get separated from the wave runner. Make sure you’re always wearing a lifejacket and have a whistle.”

The driver of the jet ski is at the hospital for treatment. He’s expected to fully recover.
