NORTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY (KMOV.com) -

A man who offered cleaning services to North County residents is accused of assaulting an elderly woman in her home.

Jerome Smith, 25, is charged with burglary and sexual abuse.

Smith was leaving fliers on doors along Elm Grove Avenue in North County to promote a home cleaning service called Deep Clean Carpet.

While handing out the fliers, police believe he forced his way into the home of a 68-year-old woman and grabbed her breast. She then bit him and grabbed a butcher knife to scare him away, police say.

“We don’t know what could have happened had he remained, and she became incapacitated or fell down, or if he gained control of her and the situation,” said Lt. Tim Burger with Hazelwood Police.

Smith left his phone number on the fliers, which made it easy for officers to track him down within an hour.  During that one-hour time span, police say he went back to several homes to collect the fliers so police would not find his number.
