BERKELEY (KMOV.com) -

A 10-year-old girl was airlifted to a Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital after being hit by a car in Berkeley Thursday evening.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Airport Road and Jefferson around 7:30 p.m.

According to police, the girl was crossing a busy stretch of Airport Road next to Airport Elementary School when she was hit by a gold Sedan.

Troopers say the driver then drove a short distance, but then came back to scene and is cooperating with officers.

Investigators say it is too early to say how fast the car might have been going. They say they will also be checking for whether drugs or alcohol could have played a part.

Troopers on scene say the preliminary investigation shows the driver may have been in the turn lane when the child stepped out into the street. But they say they are still processing all of the evidence. Troopers also say the section of road the little girl crossed did not have a crosswalk. Police also say the there is a hill and a curve at the spot where the child was hit, making it tough for the driver to see her.

Kertrena Banks, witness said, "When I came up her the little girl was laying in the street, scared up real bad, her legs had wounds on both of them. You could tell she was hurt real bad."

Authorities say the child was originally critical condition but has been upgraded to serious condition.

Banks mentioned people are often speeding along the stretch of Airport Road where the accident took place.

Because of the child's condition, the Missouri Highway Patrol will be taking over the investigation.
