VELDA CITY, Mo. (KMOV.com) – St. Louis County officials are investigating after a man was found dead inside a burned home Thursday morning in Velda City.

The two-alarm fire broke out around 12:30 a.m. at a home in the 6900 block of Woodrow.

Fire officials said a neighbor called 911 after smelling smoke and hearing popping sounds from the victim's home. When they arrived, they found a man deceased inside.

"Then I heard this loud noise. I heard pop, pop, pop, and I thought it was my house on fire, and when I looked, I noticed it was my neighbor's house on fire so immediately I called 911," neighbor Kel Ward said.

Bomb and Arson and Crime Scene investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
