GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) -

A 3-year-old boy who nearly drowned at a Granite City pool was saved by an 18-year-old lifeguard Tuesday.

The incident happened at the Wilson Park Pool around 3:00 p.m.

"All of a sudden we see a body above water floating," said Amanda Kendall, witness.

The boy was in area where the water is around 3-4 feet deep when he appeared to be struggling. A lifeguard then sprang into action and pulled the boy from the pool.

He administered 20 chest compressions to the boy, who then coughed up water.

The victim was conscious and breathing when he was taken to a hospital to be checked out.

Justin Brinkman, Facilities Manager at Wilson Park Pool said, "When he [the boy] left here he [the boy] was alert and conscious and it appears it's going to be a happy ending story that could have been a tragedy."
