(KMOV.com) – After the scare at Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur on June 13, authorities are using robots to investigate suspicious packages.

The bomb-detecting robots can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, but there is no price tag to save lives.

One type of robot that is used to investigate packages is a Pedsco RMI-9. This robot is remotely operated. They can safely approach suspicious packages just about anywhere.

With the robot’s arm, it is able to move or carry objects to safety. And with cameras and microphones, bomb investigators search for things like wires or listen for ticking from a safe distance.

After two potentially explosive devices were found at Mercy Hospital, the robot was able to provide detectives with an x-ray of both packages. The robot was able to blow up one of the packages to render it safe.

The St. Louis County Police Department says robots are an important tool to use. They say the Mercy Hospital call was an example of a great coordinated response to keep the public safe.
