Portion of I-44 to close this weekend

Posted: Updated:

ST. LOUIS (KMOV.com-) -- Drivers making their way downtown this weekend should find alternate routes if they planned on taking Interstate 44.

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) announced a closure of all lanes on I-44 between Jefferson Avenue and Vandeventer Avenue. The ramps from Vandeventer Avenue to eastbound I-44, and both ramps from Lafayette and Jefferson to westbound I-44 will also be closed.

The closures will go into effect June 17 at 8 p.m.

While drivers still can use Vandeventer Avenue, Chouteau Avenue, and Jefferson Avenue as detours to bypass the closure, MODOT recommends using the interstates as the detours.

An hour before the closure, Grand Boulevard will close in both directions at 7 p.m.

MoDOT said southbound Grand will close at Lafayette and westbound I-44. Drivers will still be able to turn onto westbound I-44.

Northbound Grand will be closed at the eastbound I-44 ramps, yet drivers can still turn on I-44.

MoDOT said a U-turn is available at McCree or Shaw.

All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m Monday.

During the weekend-long closure, crews plan to demolish a portion of the Grand Bridge.

As with any road closure, drivers should allow themselves extra time for their commute.
