The Rockwood School District is boasting a new fleet of buses for its students. It’s a move that will save taxpayers $1 million until 2018.

Rockwood Superintendent Dr. Eric Knost proudly hopped aboard a big yellow bus.

“This is about pride, this is about our team, and these are the taxpayers’ buses and they reside here,” said Dr. Knost.

The ribbon cutting on June 1 finally severs ties with private company First Student.

The district ditched the contractor after discovering they could save money operating their own buses.

News 4 has been following concerns with First Student buses in Rockwood over the years with reports of buses not starting and many failing inspections.

Most of the buses now belonging to the district itself are brand new.

Ninety percent of drivers and mechanics came right over from First Student.

“Obviously they all had to apply and interview, because that's Rockwood policy, but we were thrilled to see so many interested in coming over,” said Dr. Knost.

Dr. Knost says there were some bumps in the road to transition, but overall, he says, their own fleet is what's best for students and taxpayers.

“It's the right thing to do financially,” said Dr. Knost.

All 186 of the new buses should be in place by the end of June, well before the start of the 2016-2017 school year.
