ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) -

The St. Louis Board of Aldermen voted to create a prescription drug monitoring program Friday.

The program stores and reports information about consumers’ prescriptions for controlled substances. The goal is to fight the opioid epidemic by preventing “doctor shopping,” in which in an addict or dealer goes from doctor to doctor to get a prescription.

St. Louis County already created a similar program.

Missouri is only state in the country without a statewide prescription drug monitoring program.
