Many residents of Ferguson believe a newly opened Starbucks can help the city heal and build something positive.

The location opened on West Florissant near I-270 Friday. It is one of 15 stores aimed to target urban areas and address systemic barriers facing young people. 95 percent of the workers live within a five-mile radius. The contractors who built the store live in the Ferguson-Florissant area.

Ferguson resident Adrienne Lemons, who says her father will probably spend the rest of his life in prison, works at the Starbucks. She calls it a safe haven to escape chaos.

“We need to have a positive outlook because I know Ferguson has a negative one. I just feel like it should be changed. One thing could change the whole community and I feel like this is where it starts,” said Lemons.

Starbucks partnered with the Greater St. Louis Urban League, where young people can come in and learn about building a business. Many hope it will bring change and bridge the gap for young people.

“Even if it’s just through a cup of coffee and laughs or maybe even just having your drinks ready when you come in,” Lemons said.
