ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV.com) – Three people were shot, including one suspect who was shot by a park ranger in Carondelet Park Sunday night around 7:20 p.m.

Investigators say a fight broke out during a barbecue between two men, a 36-year-old and 38-year-old. During the fight, the 36-year-old man, who police say is a convicted felon, pulled out a gun and shot the 38-year-old in the stomach and fled in a Chevy. The park ranger attempted to stop the suspect, but as the suspect pulled over, he opened fire on the ranger. The ranger returned fire, shooting the suspect.

“This individual we believe is a convicted felon,” said St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotons. “He has a .45 caliber semi-automatic weapon with a defaced serial number on it so I can’t tell if that gun was stolen or not right now and he’s willing to shoot at an individual at a park and at a uniform park ranger. That’s the problem. That’s the challenge we have.”

The 38-year-old man is in critical, unstable condition. The 36-year-old is in critical, but stable condition. The third victim, a woman who was nearby at the time of the incident, was grazed by the bullet. The park ranger was not injured.

A large police presence was seen in the area, but officials are reporting the park ranger was not injured.

The shooting happened near the Loughborough/Holly Hills intersection

This isn’t the first time a shooting has taken place in parks across the area. There were at least six cases of park or playground shootings in 2015.

“There are 30 park rangers, including supervisors, for the city’s many parks and they do visit parks. From Forest Park to Carondelet Park, to Fairground Park to O’Fallon Park, all the time,” said St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson.

Dotson says there aren’t enough park rangers to be at every park at all times.
