Transportation officials in St. Charles County have quietly been working with traffic signals to make everyone’s commute smoother.

More than 125 miles of fiber optic cable has been installed to connect traffic signals with one another. Data from those lights is then funneled back to the MoDOT building in Town and Country where it is monitored by personnel who can re-program lights depending on the traffic situation.

In addition, the municipalities, St. Charles County and the state of Missouri are asking St. Charles County residents to share their biggest traffic concerns in an online survey, which you can access here. The project is known as Gateway Green Light.

“We’re looking for them to give us input on when they drive to work or take their kids to school. Where are the areas that are seeing congestion?” said John Greifzu, St. Charles County Transportation Director.

Gateway Green Light will use all of the feedback to synchronize traffic signals on streets, especially those that cross city limits.
