Department of Revenue overpaying cities, counties in Illinois since 2014

Posted: Updated:

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. ( – Illinois officials claim local governments were overpaid by the Department of Revenue.

According to Bloomberg, the department said since 2014 the state overpaid millions to cities, counties and school districts. The total amount of the overpayment is around $168 million.

Since the discovery of the overpaid funds the state has been working to get the money back. It hasn’t said whether the money will need to be paid back in full or when the deadline is but a lot of the cities and counties cannot afford the repayment.

For example, the state gave Chicago more than $19 million extra and the school district there is already dealing with a $1 billion deficit.

The overpayment is the state’s fault and ultimately, they said, taxpayers will be the ones forced to pay.
