FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. (KMOV.com) – The City of Fairview Heights is building its first recreational center.
The city hopes the new facility will create a gathering place for the community and help bring people together.
“We are excited about the opportunity to consider and finalize plans for the construction of a recreation complex for our residents and guests of our community to enjoy for decades to come,” said Mayor Mark Kupsky.
The multi-use facility will have a pool, gym and fitness center.
The project is expected to cost between $10.5 and $12 million, which the mayor said will be funded with the help of the city’s food and beverage tax. The operational cost will be paid with user fees. The facility will not cost taxpayers.
City leaders said they have not decided where to build the facility but they plan to make a decision this summer.
Kupsky said he hopes the center will be open by 2019.
