MAPLEWOOD, Mo.  (KMOV.com) – A disgruntled ex-cook allegedly tried to blow up a popular Maplewood sports bar where he used to work on April 17.

A probable cause statement said Alexander Silver, 19, threw two Molotov cocktails at the front entrance of the restaurant at a time when the restaurant is normally still occupied by employees.

Silver parked his car in the back of the building and blocked the rear exit with his vehicle prior to allegedly throwing the Molotov cocktails at the front of the establishment.

Detective Mike Gilb of the Maplewood Police Department described the Molotov cocktails as, “… a home exploding device, it’s gasoline inside of a bottle.”

The front of the building was damaged, but the bar's owner, Dave Sendejas, said he had no problem painting over the damage with supports of the Blues and Cardinals.

Police said they have little doubt about what Silver wanted to do.

“It shows his intent was to trap workers inside. He had a vendetta against the business. He was let go a month ago [March], because of his own wrongdoing, not showing up for work. In his mind, I guess, it was his way to get back at the business,” said Gilb.

Sendejas said Silver worked at The Post for about five months as a cook. Sendejas also mentioned he remembered Silver as a nice, quiet kid.

“He [Silver] had been up here multiple times after he worked here. There's not an incident that calls for this sort of retaliation or aggression,” said Sendejas.

On April 17, employees had closed the bar early and were behind the bar at the time of the fire. No one was injured.

Police said Silver was arrested quickly since he left the family car parked by the back door. Silver is charged with one count of first-degree arson.
